“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” Dr. Seuss
Some great words from a great author. Kids, and adults, all over the world who are familiar with “The cat in the hat” would do well to remember these words.
The problem arises on the days when some of us might wonder “Who am I?” or “How do I feel?”
We all know what it feels like to be pulled in several different directions by different people and situations. So often we are caught up in the daily necessities of life that we forget to stop and remember our own goals, wants and needs.
Sometimes we do things because we feel it is what our parents, friends, family, etc. want us to do. Sometimes it is because we feel that we have no other choice. The reasons why we may neglect ourselves, though often honourable, are endless.
So how do we stop allowing ourselves to be dictated to by external sources and take responsibility for ourselves and the way we want to live our lives?
As Steve Pavlina states, “Personal development is hard work.”
He’s right. There is no quick fix, no magic pill and no easy solution. We move forward by learning from the past and present to create a better future, as Steve Olson puts it.
Only by forgetting outside pressures, opinions and expectations can we really learn to be ourselves and flourish as we all dream of doing.
Though easier said than done, Dr. Seuss has definitely got it right: Those who matter won’t mind.
